After the end of the First World War many memorials were erected across the country in memory of those who had lost their lives in the conflict.Ashton War Memorial

In some cases these were ornate public monuments placed in prominent locations in towns and villages. However, there are also many other more simple tablets and panels to be found in churches, schools and other buildings commemorating the loss of local people.

The names of those who fell in the Second World War and subsequent conflicts were often added to existing monuments. Alternatively, new memorials may have been created to honour these later casualties.

You can search our online database to see the names of those who are remembered on the memorials in Tameside.

Requests for additional names to be put on War Memorials.

The list of names to go on War Memorials to those who fell in World War One and Two were often agreed by local Committees and they had differing criteria for who was included on the list.  The criteria may have included factors such as geographic boundaries; lists of those known to have fallen; and the wishes of local families.  We now get occasional requests for names to be added to War Memorials and below we set out what information we need to consider your request and provide some useful links.

If you would like the Council to consider adding additional information on to a War Memorial please provide the following information to us.  Please only send copies of documents, do not send any original material:

  • Your contact details.
  • Your relationship to the named person you are requesting be added.
  • The name of the person you wish to be added, their date of birth and known addresses.
  • The date and location of their death.
  • Their service number and regiment if you have these details.
  • The War Memorial which you would like the name added to - please be specific as there are several in towns such as Hyde and Dukinfield.
  • Confirmation that the individual was a member of the armed forces (regular or reserve) who was killed on duty while performing functions attributable to the special circumstances and requirements of the armed forces.
  • Please provide evidence that the person lived within the town where you are requesting the Memorial is added.
  • Please provide any information you know about why the name was previously omitted from the Memorial.
  • Please confirm that you've checked other Memorials locally to check that the person is not named on those - there are Memorials in Churches and some Town Halls as well as those which the Local Authority look after.
  • Any other information you think is relevant to demonstrate that there was an omission from the War Memorial which now needs to be rectified.

Once we have received your information we may need to carry out additional checks and we may need to ask further information.  We will also need to consider how a name can best be added to the War Memorial in the most appropriate manner for that War Memorial - this will vary depending on if the names are etched into stone or if they are on bronze plaques.

If the Council agrees that the name should be added to the Memorial we will then need to apply for Listed Building Consent as most of the War Memorials looked after by the Council are now listed.  Please note that the information you share with us will need to be shared with Historic England to form part of the Listed Building Consent application.

Once we have received Listed Building Consent and once suitable budget is identified we will arrange for the name to be added to the Memorial.

You can find out more information on adding names to War Memorials from the War Memorial Trust here: https://www.warmemorials.org/faqs/#Addition_of_names

Please email all requests for additional names to greenspace@tameside.gov.uk
